A promising plate that lacked true direction
Good shrimp and excellent collards gave this a promising start, though the grits and gravy never quite caught up. The dinner version is worth another look.

I stopped in for a weekday lunch and went for the Shrimp & Grits. Six very good medium shrimp arrived in noticeably different sizes. The grits were fine but unremarkable, and the gravy had the same problem. The tasso ham receded into the background. The heirloom cherry tomatoes were welcome, but the collards were the strongest part of the plate.
The dish did not stand with the best versions tried around town. The shrimp and collards gave it real strengths, but the plate as a whole lacked direction.
A few places around town have a lunch/brunch version as well as a dinner version. The bartender said the dinner shrimp and grits was different and better. I look forward to trying that as B. Matthews is a very good restaurant.
