Shrimp and grits · July 2023
Succulent shrimp, lively collards, and a silky Chardonnay butter sauce made this a lovely plate; a firmer, more flavorful grit cake would have carried it even higher.

First impression: Wow, is this a fancy deconstruction. That said, this is delicious.
First bite: the collards. These collards are incredible—tons of flavor, perfectly tender, and more than a hint of heat. Five tail-on, very large, super-succulent shrimp in a Chardonnay butter sauce. These are perfect, save for the tail. The sauce is incredible. Note to self: learn how to make this.
But, and this is a big but, the “smoked Gouda grit cake” just isn’t working. I don’t get cheese, especially Gouda, and certainly not smoked. It’s not even fried crispy. My Grandma would not approve of this mush.
Overall, this is damn delicious. The mush cake takes away from the dish because it cannot sit next to these greens and those shrimp in that sauce. It’s just too fancy to be the top in this town. Is there such a thing as between an A and A-? It’s wonderful and worth every penny. That grit cake needs hella work. Fancy-pants shrimp and grits need to be perfect to get an A+ in Savannah.
