Shrimp and grits · August 2023
Twelve sweet shrimp, rich cheesy grits, and plenty of tasso made this a generous Lowcountry portion; tail-on shrimp was the one fussy note.

The plate looks beautiful and has four or five red onion rings on top. Quite unusual, but it looks like a winner. First bite of the grits and they’re super rich and cheesy—some of the thickest and cheesiest around. Lots of tasso ham. The gravy might be a bit muted, but the grits are the standout here. The shrimp are medium-sized and very sweet, and there’s freaking 12 of them. It’s garnished with lots of green onions and microgreens for a twist. This is delicious. I can easily see this being some people’s favorite in town. Solid A.
However, all 12 of these delicious shrimp have the tails on. I feel like I work here now shelling shrimp. Maybe I can make this my shift meal. Minus ten Lowcountry Score points. I really did enjoy the onion rings, so maybe they get a couple points back in extra credit.
SOAPBOX: Folks, the shrimp are in gravy. When I have to use my hands to peel shrimp, I get gravy on them, then I have to lick my fingers or wipe them on my pants. Just peel the damn shrimp. Thanks.
