Shrimp and grits · July 2023
Velvety cream sauce and excellent cheesy grit cakes made this a thoroughly enjoyable plate. Tail-on shrimp make it messy.

They have an appetizer version that is two grit cakes and four shrimp for $13.50 (at time of review), and an entree that is three grit cakes and eight shrimp for twice that. First bite: the “country ham gravy” is super rich, creamy, cheesy, velvety—but it’s more like a parmesan cream sauce. I equate country ham gravy with a rich brown sauce, but this is delicious in its own right.
The shrimp are tasty if only medium-sized. The grit cakes are the tastiest cakes I’ve found so far, because they are the cheesiest, which also means they are served as molten lava inside. They retain a bit of crispiness, which so far only a few places that try to use grit cakes have done.
I’d love to know the ingredients to this sauce. Super velvety. This is quite a delicious dish, but I think it’s disqualified from best in town due to the grit cakes and general nontraditionalness. I still give it an A. The appetizer is quite a bit of food and would be fun to share before dinner. Or brunch. Or bedtime.
